Believe it or not, most of the time, this is the case for many consumers, the difficulty of choice. So many makeup brands have beautiful colors/options to choose from, but without the knowledge of how to choose the right blush for you or how to use it correctly to achieve the best result, it can get very frustrating and unpleasant. Choosing the right blush isn't just by the colors you're attracted to visually. Different pigments in makeup can affect the appearance of your skin and your look as a whole. Just because you like a color doesn't mean it will necessarily work on your skin.

Before you figure out what blush colors are right for you, you need to figure out YOU first. Let me explain. We are all beautiful in our own way. We all have different features. Skin

tones and undertones, hair color, eye color, and age. For example, blush that looks good on dark skin won't always look good on light skin. Some blush will make your eyes, skin, or hair pop in a very soft natural way, and some can make everything look over made and dramatic. Dark colors can look softer on younger/tighter skin. On older skin, blush/color can look more dramatic as the skin texture changes.

You can still use those colors, but your application needs to be done differently. Mature makeup application is different than other applications, and it's not a bad thing. It also has a lot to do with the makeup brand and what ingredients they use. Different ingredients in makeup can affect the texture and the results in a very different way. Is the makeup talc and paraben free? Vegan and cruelty free? Is it affordable, clean makeup?

So, part of choosing your blush or makeup as well is knowing what brand you like or support.

What is Your Skin Tone and Undertone?

Knowing your skin tone and undertone will help you the most in choosing the best blush for you.

Light/Fair: even fair all over, pink or peach

Medium/Tan: yellow, sometimes greenish or olive/grayish, and even rosy red

Dark/Brown: yellow or reddish

Deep/Black: yellow, reddish or cool blue/purple

Rosacea: When it comes to rosacea, you need to stay away from Blush colors that have red or peachy undertones in them. They will make the red areas on your face much more noticeable. Find a Blush that has a beige/white undertone, that will make your skin color pop more and help blend/lighten the rosacea.

How to Find Your Undertone

There are three types of undertones, which are described as follows:

Neutral: a mix of warm and cool

Warm: yellow, golden, peachy, sometimes ashy

Cool: pink, red, sometimes blueish

Look at the veins under your wrist. You will be cool-toned if your veins are bluish or purple. Or warm-toned if your veins are greenish.

Blush Colors for Every Skin Tone

If your skin is light/fair, blush colors that look natural on medium/tan skin will appear darker on your skin tone. Blush colors that look natural on dark/brown or deep/black skin look much more dramatic on your skin tone. And vice versa. You want to choose something that doesn't clash with the look you are trying to achieve.

If your skin is light/fair with some pink or peach undertones, you want to choose makeup that doesn't have those pigments in them. If you do, it will make your natural skin tone look much more pink or peach. Understanding how to use the right blush for you to complement your complexion is a great way to get great results with your daily makeup routine.

These two blushes are both light colors, however, the blush "Beautiful" doesn't have any red pigment in it, which will make your skin look more natural. On the other hand, we have the blush "Sweetie Pie." In this blush, we added red pigment which will bring all your red, pink, or peach undertones, and make your skin look much more red, pink, or peach than it is.

The same for medium/tan skin and makeup that has yellow or olive pigments in it, dark/brown skin and makeup that has yellow or reddish pigments, or deep/black skin and makeup that has yellow, reddish or cool blue purplish pigments. The right blush for you will be something that complements, rather than emphasizes, your skin.

It's all about what you're trying to achieve, whether it be a natural or dramatic look. A great way to figure it out is by trying on different outfits with different colors, see how and what it does to your skin, how it affects your eyes and hair, and the most important, how does the color make you feel? Then translate that to your blush color choice.

Tips for Applying Blush Perfectly

Blush are also great eyeshadows, the only difference is the size of the pan.
Blush expiration date is one year.
When I apply blush on myself or my clients, I start at the upper cheek near the ear. I use the body/side of the brush, not the head. I apply the blush in downward strokes towards the nose stopping at the ball/apple of the cheeks.

This allows you to control the color and make the application look clean and beautiful. It also makes the blush last much longer.
